Four Rivers in an Expeditionary Learning School of about 200 students. The school places an emphasis on student centered learning in a heavily supportive environment. Teachers are encouraged to design a standards based curriculum that focus on skills, content, and behavioral instruction. The EL methodology is similar in many ways to the Understanding by Design model. Both focus on thematic curriculum development driven by guiding questions. Assessment attempts to be as authentic as possible and is, in most cases, a part of the instructional process.

Applications are welcome from any K-12 teacher who has a serious interest in using the collections at the MHS to prepare primary-source-based curricula, supported by documents and visual aids, in the fields of American history, language arts, or science.

My project deals with the particular problems associated with racialized slavery in a republic based upon enlightenment priciples. I will be exploring the practice of bracketed universalism. That is, the transition of free person status from a condition of land ownership to a condition of race. I will then develop a curriculum project to help my students access this concept.
